Engineering Case Study: Navix

Engineering design consultancy Navix had specific IT needs that weren’t being met. Read about how we provided them with the infrastructure they needed to better achieve their business goals and protect sensitive client information.

Navix is an engineering design consultancy that works with architects and mechanical engineers on large projects. Its clients include several Fortune 50 companies, and it is often tasked with safeguarding sensitive and proprietary information.

In addition, Navix has a hybrid work policy, and many of its team members regularly travel to work alongside clients, which makes data protection and security — including meeting specific requirements from clients — an absolute necessity.

For nearly three years, Dynamic Computing provided Navix with comprehensive managed IT services, including a complete overhaul of its IT systems after the company lost confidence in its previous provider.

“We stopped believing [the provider] could help us stay compliant,” Paul Manzer, P.E. of Navix says. “They lacked a strategy, and it seemed like recommendations they made were fragmented rather than cohesive.”

First Steps

When Navix first partnered with Dynamic Computing, its IT was in disarray. The company didn’t have a complete picture of how its infrastructure was built, where performance was being throttled, and whether it was indeed meeting security requirements from clients.

We kicked off the engagement with the company by conducting a comprehensive audit. Every piece of Navix’s IT — from hardware and software, to networking, security, and storage solutions — was identified and catalogued by our team. Employees were also surveyed to help identify pain points, IT needs that weren’t being met, and areas where employees thought improvements could be made.

This process revealed that Navix’s IT infrastructure needed a major overhaul in order for the company to achieve its business goals while still meeting the needs of its Fortune 50 clients.

“It became apparent that we needed Dynamic Computing to completely rebuild our IT infrastructure — new servers, new circuitry, new firewalls,” Manzer says. “We just took it down to the studs and started from scratch.”

As a smaller organization, Navix clearly had concerns about costs. The company knew it had to spend, but the full picture of just how much was hard to see.

To alleviate these concerns, we provided a thorough budget, mapping out both the capital and operating costs for overhauling the company’s IT. This budget took into account Navix’s specific security and processing power needs, since the company routinely works with large data sets and resource-intensive 3D modeling software.

By being candid about what could be achieved and at what cost, and by providing Navix with a detailed roadmap for meeting its IT needs, we quickly earned the company’s trust.

This was extremely important, since Navix itself was entrusted with storing and using confidential data on its own network. Any breach or loss of data due to system outages could have been catastrophic for the company, which meant cyber security measures had to be on point across the board.

A True Partnership

Prior to working with us, Navix had experienced a three-day system outage that had cost the company a substantial amount of revenue. It had also recently shifted to a hybrid work model brought on by the pandemic.

The company needed an IT partner that was reliable and capable of quickly addressing any issues to minimize downtime. But more than that, it needed a provider who understood its industry and the security needs of its clients inside and out.

We took the time to thoroughly understand the company’s issues and the measures it needed to take to establish a robust and secure IT infrastructure. We then provided Navix with curated solutions that met all the company’s unique requirements so that the IT investment stayed within budget.

For close to three years, our team partnered with Navix to monitor and manage its IT. We did so without major incident. We not only completely overhauled and improved the company’s infrastructure, but we also helped ensure it had the right solutions in place to scale along with the company itself.

Although Navix has since been acquired by a large firm with its own IT in place, the company’s leadership still recommends us as their first choice for other companies facing similar IT challenges in its industry.

“If you have aspirations of your business evolving and you need to avoid downtime and cyber attacks at all costs, you have to call Dynamic Computing,” Manzer says. “They’d be my first choice again because they’ll be a real partner and will help you get to where you’re trying to go as a business.”
