Nonprofit Case Study: Public Health Advocates
Nonprofit organization Public Health Advocates works directly with communities to challenge social, political, and economic issues that lead to healthcare inequality. Read how we provided them with a detailed roadmap for building the infrastructure they needed to focus more on their important work and less on the technology they depend upon.
For more than two decades, Public Health Advocates has worked to make healthcare more equitable in California. To do this, the organization challenges the social, political, and economic systems that perpetuate disparities.
With a team working from home 90% of the time, the nonprofit needed an IT partner that could meet its data privacy and security needs.
“Our current needs weren’t being met,” says Patrick Thornsburg, Administrative Manager of the organization’s Stockton office. “When I first started my role, we were really struggling. We were buying our laptops from Best Buy.”

“Our current needs weren’t being met,” says Patrick Thornsburg, Administrative Manager of the organization’s Stockton office. “When I first started my role, we were really struggling. We were buying our laptops from Best Buy.”

The Kickoff
Knowing Public Health Advocates needed a complete IT overhaul, Thornsburg knew he had to make a solid case with the organization’s leadership. That’s where our comprehensive IT audit came in.
“We let Dynamic Computing know what we were dealing with and what we wanted,” Thornsburg says. “We needed to standardize across the organization — everyone having the same laptop, same docking situations, and so on.”
By conducting our comprehensive audit, we were able to pinpoint where the organization’s IT was currently coming up short — which, as it turns out, was pretty much everywhere. We then built them a comprehensive roadmap that not only delivered on what the organization wanted from their IT, but it also set them up to both scale and save on their IT investment in the long run.
“They built a bulletproof plan for us,” says Thornsburg.

Making the Case
With the plan developed, we worked with Thornsburg to make the case to the Public Health Advocates board for the substantial investment required.
A key to bolstering that case was the fact that our IT audit revealed the organization had actually been overspending with their previous provider.
“We found out we were spending a lot of money for no good reason,” Thornsburg says. “Dynamic Computing was able to tell us what to cut out and what to put over there where it should be, and that really helped sell the investment to leadership.”
Beyond acquiring industrial-grade laptops and reorganizing Public Health Advocates’ IT investments, a major component of our roadmap was improving the organization’s security.
“We had no security,” Thornsburg says, “so Dynamic basically tore everything down and rebuilt our IT from the bottom up with security as the foundation.”
An Ongoing Relationship
After our foundational IT assessment was delivered, Public Health Advocates signed a contract with us to be their managed IT services provider going forward.
“The cost isn’t cheap,” Thornsburg says, “but it’s worth it. Dynamic Computing isn’t just solving our issues, they’re showing me how to do it as well.”
As the team member put into the role of solving the organization’s IT woes, Thornsburg also appreciates the communication Dynamic Computing provides.
“The last IT company we were using, a lot of the communication came from email,” he says. “With Dynamic Computing, we have a dedicated tech for our team. The whole process is smoother, and it’s been a thousand times better than it was. They’re leading us in the right direction.”
